In the course of history, two problems that occupied Mustafa Kemal the most have always attracted attention: one is the future of the Turkish Nation, the other is the Turkish homeland. These two issues lie at the heart of Atatürk's lifelong struggles. Since childhood, Mustafa Kemal has lived with the excitement of inaccessible love of country and country. He has always combined his very good knowledge of history and geography with the logic of reason and experimentation, and has reached the highest of achievements. This shows his superior geopolitical thinking. He is a forward thinking man. He looks at things from a very broad perspective. His comments are accurate and precise. Their decisions are based on very fundamental principles. He reads constantly and determines his purpose very well before starting his work.

Ataturk and Hatay

<h3>Antakya is Established</h3>
<h3>In the region where the present city is located, there was another city called Antigonia in the 4th century BC. Seleucid king Seleucus I had Antigonia completely destroyed. In the same place, in the 12th year of his accession to the throne, on May 22, 300 BC, he laid the foundation of a new city with a ceremony. The waste material of Antigonia was used in the construction of this city, the people of Antigonia were transferred to the new city and this became the center of the Seleucid State. This new city, which Seleucus named "Antiokheia" after his father, is one of the 16 cities founded by Seleucus with the same name. Antakya is distinguished from the others by the names "Antakya on the side of the rebel" or "Antakya near Defne".</h3>
<h3>&nbsp;</h3>
<h3>As far as is known, Defne (Harbiye) was founded before Antakya. Seleukos Nikator; He established beautiful streets, theaters and recreation areas in Defne. He decorated temples and streets with statues, primarily the statue of Apollo.</h3>
<h3>&nbsp;</h3>
<h3>In fact, the only reason why Defne was given such importance was not because it was a summer resort, but because it was considered sacred because of its location in mythology (the sacred legend of the Bay).</h3>
<h3>&nbsp;</h3>
<h3>In the city plan drawn by Xenarius, defined as the "grid plan", the streets will see the sun in winter, in summer; It is arranged to receive the wind from the Orontes Valley. Antioch and Latakia were defined as "sister" or twin cities for a long time because of the same plan of Latakia.Antakya, which was the capital of the empire, became an important trade and industrial center around the world in time.</h3>
The city described Antakya as a "tetrapolis" (quadruple city) because it consisted of four quarters, each of which was surrounded by separate walls:

The first two neighborhoods were founded by Seleukos Nikator I, the founder of the kingdom, on the rebel side, Macedonians and Greeks were settled in one, and Syrians in the other.

The third quarter, located in the Asi river, was founded by Seleukos II Kallikinos (246-226 BC). The royal palace was here.
&nbsp;
The fourth quarter, called Epiphany, is located at the foot of the Silpius Mountain, in the city of Antiochus IV. It was founded by Epiphanes (175-164 BC).

Antiochus III in 195 BC. Carthaginian Hannibal visited Antakya during his reign. In this period, Antakya had an important place in the region in terms of trade and military. The city, which had the privilege of being the capital of the Seleucos State, was equipped with magnificent structures. Antiochus Epiphanes had an aqueduct, the city council building, the Temple of Jupiter Kapitolinus and another commercial agora built in the city. At that time, only big cities like Miletos and Pergamon had two agoras. Feasts and Olympics were held frequently in the city, which attracted everyone with its orchards, magnificent structures and monuments. Defne (Daphneia) near the capital was a beautiful summer town with its villas and streets. The city was decorated with circus, theatre, inn, public baths, marble streets, temples and various statues. Mostly members of the dynasty and high society used to come here. In 67 BC, the Governor of Cilicia, Markius Reks, had a circus built in the city.
<h3>Hatay in the Roman Period</h3>
<h3>In 64 BC, Antakya joined the Roman Empire with the status of a free city and became the capital of the empire's Syrian Province. After that, the city We learn from the history books that Caesar, who visited in 47 BC, ensured the establishment of large structures, that the Roman Governor Cassius resisted the siege of the Parthians here, and that Antuvan and Cleopatra stayed for a while in this beautiful town.</h3>

<h3>According to sources, Christianity spread for the first time outside of Jerusalem in Antakya, A.D. In the years 34-36, St. Paul, St. Barnabas and St. Pierre preached in the streets of Antakya. The Habib Neccar incident, which is mentioned in Surah Yasin in the Qur'an, is also related to the arrival of Christianity in Antakya and is believed to have occurred in Antakya during these years. Hz. The name "Christian" was given here for the first time to those who believed in Jesus.</h3>
<h3>&nbsp;</h3>
<h3>In the 1st century AD, Antakya was the third largest city of the Roman Empire in terms of area and population, after Rome, Alexandria and Ctepsiphon, and the 4th largest city in the world. It is stated in the sources that for the first time in the world, street lighting was applied on the magnificent avenue with marble columns on both sides (this street, known as "Herod street", was at the same direction and where today's Kurtuluş street is located).</h3>
Antakya was also important in terms of regional roads at that time. The road from Aleppo in Mesopotamia is the Mediterranean; The roads leading from Anatolia to the south passed through Syria, Arabia and Egypt from here. Antakya was a place of commerce, industry, supply and transit, a cultural center where thousands of people visited and stayed every day. In this period, Antakya had great palaces, mansions, statues, waterways, hippodrome, baths and even a sewer system.

Bringing Water to Antakya from Harbiye Waterfalls
Although Antakya was on the river bank and there were many water sources in the foothills behind it, it could not meet its water needs. As a solution to this, it was thought to bring water to the city from the Defne waterfalls, and firstly, Seleukos I commissioned engineers to build water canals, and water was brought to the city. During the Caesar period, water channels were built to meet the water needs of the people living in the upper parts of the city.

Sea Gates of Antakya: Ports
The commercial and cultural life of Antakya was very active. Export and transit trade was one of the main sources of income and wealth of the city. When the port of Seleucia was built, it became one of the centers of sea traffic. In order to protect the port, which is very important for the city, against the filling of sand and gravel brought by the floods, an enormous canal of 1380 meters long and 6x7 meters wide was built in the Roman period, 130 meters of which passes under the mountain. It was used as a naval base during the time of Trajanus and Valens.

Especially after the Orontes River became unsuitable for large ships in the 4th century AD, the importance of the port of Pieria in Seleukeia increased even more. In the early days of Islam, this place was called "Salukiya". Later, the port at the mouth of the Orontes River, El Mina-Suveydiye Port gained importance again. It developed well with the establishment of the Principality of Antakya and became the gateway of Antakya to the west.
